At present, the ATCDI focuses on five Key Program Areas.

ATCDI has established a strong presence and accumulated rich experience in the fields of energy, small scale industries, water supply and sanitation, as well as food and downstream processing. Over the years, our steadfast mission has been to develop and implement innovative technologies designed to significantly improve the quality of life for communities in Papua New Guinea, especially those in rural areas. Our efforts are centered on promoting rural development that is both culturally sensitive and sustainable, thereby facilitating enduring, positive change within the community. We have the privilege of collaborating with government institutions, non-government organizations, community groups, and donor agencies. This enables us to conduct in-depth research and develop apt tools and techniques that address the specific needs of rural development. Our skilled team, composed of engineers, scientists, and community development officers, is dedicated to sharing their knowledge on these transformative technologies with communities not only within Papua New Guinea, but also beyond its borders. Their expertise and commitment ensure that we continue to make strides in enhancing the quality of life and the sustainability of rural communities.
We conduct needs assessments in rural communities to identify specific areas where appropriate technology can improve quality of life, such as water and sanitation, agriculture, and energy access.
Develop appropriate technologies that address the needs of rural communities in Papua New Guinea and other developing countries.
Establish partnerships with government agencies, NGOs, and private sector actors to expand the reach and impact of appropriate technology interventions.
The Energy Programme conducts feasibility studies and implements micro hydro-power, solar power, and other energy systems in rural areas. By providing access to renewable energy sources, the Energy Program aims to improve the quality of life for rural communities while minimising environmental impact.
The Appropriate Technology Program (Small Industries) focuses on the development and promotion of suitable tools and equipment from available resources to enhance income-generating activities among Papua New Guinea (PNG) communities. The program works to empower communities by providing them with the skills and resources they need to become self-sufficient and economically independent.
The Water Supply and Sanitation Program provides technical assistance and training to improve infrastructure mainly in the areas of water supply and sanitation. This program conducts research, develops, and tests new technologies and equipment suitable for use in Papua New Guinea. By improving access to clean water and sanitation, the program aims to improve the health and well-being of rural communities.
The Food and Downstream Processing Program conducts research and development of small-scale, community-based food preparation and preservation techniques using local produce, with a focus on promoting health. This programme seeks to improve food security and provide communities with new income-generating opportunities.
The Liklik Buk Information Centre is a program run by the Appropriate Technology and Community Development Institute (ATCDI). Its primary function is to publish and distribute various development publications, manage a resource library, and provide information to urban and rural communities.

Our visitors include teachers, school children, villages and volunteers as well as students from the University campus, but we also welcome students from outside the campus.
